Dear friends,
If you've ever wondered what it's like to have another person get
international recognition for your own work without crediting you,
this is for you.
I'm not real big on asking favors, but if you have 30 seconds to bang
off an email to:
nytnews@nytimes.com, letters@nytimes.com, public@nytimes.com,
editorial@nytimes.com
with a simple request to print this article from the International
Herald Tribune:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/07/27/news/singupdate.php
then I would be grateful. Best is to copy the addresses and the link
into a new email rather than forward this one. If the Times prints
this article, which is from their sister newspaper, I would feel that
the issue below has been largely resolved. The story is below.
Regards,
Jason
On July 20th, this article appeared in the International Herald
Tribune print edition and online edition, with no reference to my
name or my work:
http://iht.com/articles/2007/07/20/arts/jessop.php
After I complained to the curator and the journalist that this work
was ripped off from my own work that was shown during a live event
many of you were at, and the artist Lynn Lu was also present at, the
curator spoke to Ms Lu, Ms Lu conceded, the IHT checked the facts,
the title was changed to include my name and a reference to me in the
body of the article. The artist agreed to share the small artist's fee.
Same article, picked up by the New York Times, July 25:
http://nytimes.com/2007/07/25/arts/design/25show.html?8dpc
Unfortunately the NYT did not pick up on the correction and printed
the original piece from its sister paper, the Tribune. After a late-
night call to the Times, the web edition was changed as you can see.
Finally a correction was made in the Corrections section of the paper
Times this week, but nobody reads those and the correction does not
mention the update that the work was subsequently pulled from the show.
An update article by the same author was published by the Tribune on
July 27:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/07/27/news/singupdate.php
This article, more or less, gets the most recent facts straight.
Without any prompting from me, Ms Lu and the curator decided to pull
the piece and let Ms Lu present another piece in its place. No doubt
I will not be sharing any fees considering this, but that is fine by
me as I only care about proper recognition.
An article in The Straits Times of Singapore by another journalist:
http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/Singapore/STIStory_143493.html
Here's the problem: The NYT has not picked up the follow-up article
to my knowledge. As the IHT and NYT are sister publications I am
hoping the NYT will also publish the follow-up, but they have not
done so so far. My hope is that if a few people request that the
Times print the follow-up, all of the people who only read the
original article in the paper edition of the Times, which contained
no reference to my work, will read that this piece is in fact lifted
from my own work.
If you have time to write the Times, thank you!
Regards,
Jason
